About
Stathis Petropoulos was born in Athens, Greece in 1972.
From a young age he enjoyed spending time with anything that had to do with the creation of art. His favorite pastimes where drawing, painting and model-making. After high school he attended Art Center College of Design, then went on to get his degree in industrial design from Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY. Straight after graduation, he moved to Los Angeles, California where he worked as a designer for two years. He then moved back to Athens, Greece to complete his military duties. After spending 18 months in the MIlitary Police, he went on to work for a number of architecture firms, designing furniture and interiors.
In 2002, he founded Vastdesign with his brother Vassilis. The company dealt with the design, production and sales of furniture, lighting and ceramic products for the home.
In 2015 Stathis extended his creative focus towards illustration. In May 2015, Stathis had his successful solo illustration exhibition at Skoufa Gallery in Athens, where his innovative illustrations accompanied selected texts from Homer’s Odyssey. In February 2022, his debut picture book ‘Brown and Friends’ was published by Psichogios Publishing, one of Greece’s largest publishing houses.
Approximately five years ago, Stathis ventured into the fine arts. His subjects have mainly been places that are heavily laden with memories and have deep emotional significance. He believes we all leave a mark in the places we frequent and inhabit. That mark stays long after we have gone. Stathis looks for and strives to express that mark and that emotion, in the buildings, interiors and landscapes he paints.
He works with acrylics or oils and often starts with photographs or sketches, painted or drawn, and then uses them to continue working towards the final artwork in his studio.
